Being a mom isn’t all smiles and cuddles. Let’s not sugar coat it, sometimes motherhood sucks. There, I said it, and I’m not taking it back. I love my kid so much that I might actually bite her perfectly round cheeks one day, but that doesn’t make me immune from mom-life overwhelm. Whether you’re a stay-at-home mom or a working mom, I think we can all agree that some days are rough. While my first instinct after a bad day is to go home and down the better part of a bottle of wine, I know that’s not the healthiest option.
Don’t get me wrong, wine and a good Netflix binge is always a good idea. I just mean that you should mix it up every once in a while. There are plenty of other ways to destress after a trying day of motherhood, and if you still need it, a glass of wine pairs nicely with some of these activities.

You know that book that’s been gathering dust on your nightstand? Carve out some time to actually read it. Better yet, squeeze in some reading time whenever your busy schedules allows; while the baby naps, during your lunch break, or before bed. If your commute is the most “me time” your getting these days, download Audible so you can listen to a good book on the go. Getting lost in a good book is the perfect way to escape reality for an hour, or until the next time you hear “mom!”
Exercise has been scientifically proven to boost your mood, and that makes working out a perfect stress reliever. I’ve always been a big fan of yoga, and nothing melts the stress away like a heated vinyasa flow. If you’re balling on a budget, check out my secret for a cheap yoga practice. If you feel like you need to get some of your frustrations out, try a kickboxing class. Kickboxing fitness has been my go-to these past few months, and not only do I feel and see a difference, but punching something really helps alleviate my stress.
This is one of my favorite ways to unwind are a long day not only because it’s relaxing, but because it’s super easy. Don’t just fill up the tub and sit in lukewarm water for 10 minutes and call it a night. You’ve got to really take advantage of this simple luxury. Invest in some bubbles, or better yet, indulge in the amazing bath bombs from Lush! Slather on that face mask you’ve been meaning to try, light a few candles, and throw on some relaxing tunes. Don’t forget to lock the door so no one barges in to use the potty!
I love walking. You get a little bit of exercise, but you also get to clear your head in the fresh air. A good long walk does wonders for my sanity. When my mind is feeling especially cluttered, a stroll outside usually does the trick. Why not make it a family affair? Leash up the dogs and strap the baby in the stroller. When I’m home all day, I find that a little bit of fresh air is good for everyone.
Get A Hobby
Do you enjoy baking tasty treats? Ever try one of those adult coloring books? Did you know knitting can be super relaxing? If you don’t already have a hobby, get one. If you’re not sure where to start, try out a few different activities. Check out Groupon and Living Social for discounted cooking classes, stand up paddle board lessons, and painting classes (to name a few). I really enjoy a good painting class. It completely holds my attention so that there is no opportunity to think about anything else, and I get to take home a pretty-ish painting! Find something that you enjoy doing that’s just for you, and just for fun.
Moms are so busy taking care of everyone else, sometimes we forget to take care of ourselves. To combat mom stress, prioritize your favorite self-care rituals. If you like to read, carve out daily reading time. Enjoy a good workout? Schedule your fitness classes into your family calendar. If all you need is a bubble bath and a glass of wine, tell your husband he’s got kid duty for the next thirty minutes and go lock yourself in the bathroom. Giving yourself some TLC is important. When I take care of myself, mind and body, I’m a better wife and a better mother.
